I love ballet, especially the story of Swan Lake. Prince Siegfried is celebrating his 21st birthday in the palace courtyards. He finds himself alone in a peaceful spot by an enchanted lake where swans were swimming across the lake. He sees a beautiful swan swimming with the group wearing a crown on its head. Before he could leave, dusk sets and he watches as the swan with the crown turns into the most beautiful woman. Turns out, she is Odette, the Swan Queen.
Skipping forward to the last act, Odette has fled the palace to the lake after witnessing the Prince propose to the wrong woman. Prince Siegfried finds them gathered there, consoling each other and Odette. After explaining the trickery of Von Rothbart, she forgives him. Von Rothbart and Odile appear in their inhuman forms as partly bird-like forms. Von Rothbart tells the prince he must stick to his word and marry his daughter.
This is where it gets interesting! A fight ensues! Prince Siegfried finally tells Von Rothbart that he would rather die than marry Odile! He takes Odette’s hand and they jump into the lake together. The spell is broken with their deaths and the remaining swans revert back to their humans. They quickly drive the evil Von Rothbart and Odile into the lake too, causing them to drown.
The story ends with the spirits of Prince Siegfried and Odette ascend to heaven above the Swan Lake! This, of course, is a very cut and dry synopsis of the story. You can Google the story for yourselves to read the rest!
